Most people think the frontier was a bunch of people traveling west, with blue skies and sunny weather. Coming across wild Indian hunting parties, easily building log cabins and shooting plenty of big animals for food. Really, half of those traveling west never made it and a half of those who made it didn´t live long after arriving because of diseases and lack of food. Most of the animals that were brought along were eaten by wild animals or stolen by Indians. The weather didn´t cooperate with farming all the time and many times crops were destroyed by snow, rain, or hail

His aim was to free himself more and more from those unpleasantness and to give them a semblance of harmlessness and propriety. He attained this by spending less and less time with his family, and when obliged to be at home he tried to safeguard his position by the presence of outsiders. The chief thing however was that he had his official duties. The whole interest of his life now centered in the official world and that interest absorbed him.
